Still trying to translate all the posts from my old blog. Please see this post for more info.
Also, please excuse any grammar and any other related errors you may find on this blog, as English is not my first language.
WICKED CLUB (YOUJUU CLUB) I suppose will come as a rather obscure erotic PC game for pretty much everybody. Yet interestingly enough the game was released very closely to the far more popular arcade game 「GALS PANIC」.
Both games play nearly identically since they both practically ripped off the gameplay concept from the TAITO hit games QIX and VOLFIED.
Because there's no clear info around the net on the exact release date of GALS PANIC, I really can't say for sure which game came out first. However, there's a good enough chance that WICKED CLUB was released first.
As just mentioned the game objective here is exactly the same as in VOLFIED. This time assuming the role of a lecherous lesser demon you must uncover the background image with your marker until 80% of the image is revealed.
Getting in your way though, there will be nuns, warriors, Shinto shrine maidens, occultist teenagers (of the good-natured kind I guess?), etc. Basically, it's a female all-star team of the anti-demonic movement.
All of these characters will be moving around the screen super fast as if they were bouncing billiard balls. So long as you stay on your dimension (the edge of the screen) you will remain immune to their attacks. However as soon as you enter the screen you will get crushed (or should I say 「Holy Smited」instead) if any of them gets a hold of you or your marker.
To further complicate your life, angels will often appear on the edge of the screen too. Thus you'll never be entirely safe from holy retribution...
Although it's possible to trap the enemies with your marker, it seldom pays off to be daring. The enemies and their high movement speed will always have an advantage over you.
You can find various power up items whilst uncovering the background. But apart from the speed-up (blue potion icon) and player-up (grave icon) items, I didn't found the rest to be particularly helpful. In fact some of them may even curse you with negative status effects like reduced movement speed and inverted controls.
Quality-wise the game is pretty low budget, just as you'd expect from the average eroge software maker of that time. There's only one BGM track in the entire game, but fortunately it doesn't get as tiresome like in other games.
To the game's credit though, the gameplay here is genuinely fun and chaotic. I mean, IT IS stealing VOLFIED's gameplay after all, so it's not surprising.
In my opinion the real problem with WICKED CLUB is that the undressing scenes are all crude and tasteless. They already start bad enough but will only get surprisingly more offensive in the later stages.
It's inevitable to compare WICKED CLUB to GALS PANIC since they both share the same gameplay. And out of the two I would say the later is easily the more accomplished game.
GALS PANIC had enemy special attacks, bosses, an item roulette mini-game, and just overall superior production values.
With that said, WICKED CLUB is certainly not a bad game. I suppose if it had been ported to a console like the MEGADRIVE (sans the undressing part of course), it probably would've become a niche cult hit by now.
I think the best way to define WICKED CLUB would be as a fun and chaotic QIX variant, yet a lousy and tasteless erotic game.
