Developed by WHITE BOARD for the successful SYSTEM 16 arcade board. SUKEBAN JANSHI RYUKO is an easy and accessible Mahjong arcade game that's just perfect for beginners.
● Title: スケバン雀士竜子 ● Genre: Mahjong ● Release Date: 1987 ● Developer: WHITE BOARD ● Publisher: SEGA ● Media: Arcade System Board ● System Specific: SYSTEM 16 A・B
During its original release SUKEBAN JANSHI RYUKO managed to attain commercial success thanks for the most part to its light and newbie-friendly difficulty setting.
At a time when most arcade Mahjong games were noted for their high difficulty level (with some of them just flat-out cheating you out of your coins). SUKEBAN JANSHI RYUKO set itself apart by giving players a surprisingly overpowered cheating system that made beating the game with a single credit a relatively easy achievement.
Those of you who are knowledgeable enough will probably notice that SUKEBAN JANSHI RYUKO bears the distinctive artwork style of「SHIMIZU ANO」, which by the way is one of my favorite cult game illustrators.
Some of ANO-san works include :「MÄRCHEN MAZE」(AC/NAMCO),「GALACTIC BRAVERY STORY」(AC/JALECO), and「SUPER GOD WEAPON : ZEROIGAR」(PC-FX/NEC).
He also worked in conjunction with WHITE BOARD studio (later renamed「SANTOS」) on「MAHJONG QUEST」(AC/X68/PCE), 「BATTLE GOLFER YUI」(MD), and「MAHJONG COP RYU」(MD), which is the sequel to this production.
■THE STORY OF SUKEBAN JANSHI RYUKO
The game title and story are a clear parody of the hit TV drama series「SUKEBAN DEKA」.
An evil organization called「JONGROUKAI」(a parody of「SEIROUKAI」the enemy faction in SUKEBAN DEKA II) is hell-bent on conquering Japan.
Opposing them is a shadow goverment group led by a mysterious man known only as the「SHADOW DIRECTOR」.
The DIRECTOR recruited the ESP gifted and Mahjong hot-shot sukeban「RYUKU」to infiltrate the underground Mahjong circles and crush JANROUKAI's ambitions at any cost! ■GAME INFORMATION
The game features two modes of play :「NORMAL」and「ADVICE」.
ADVICE mode will offer you on-screen hints on what tiles to keep and/or discard in order to reach Tenpai as fast as possible. It will also show you what tiles you might need to go out, as well as remind you of any useful Chi or Pon opportunities that might come up.
Of course you need to take in mind that this mode sole concern is to help you get into a Tenpai instance, and thus it won't help you build more elaborated and rewarding hands.
Still, ADVICE mode can be incredibly useful for players looking to get into Mahjong videogames. You can use it to familiarize yourself with the tiles and with the basic rules of the game.
To beat your opponent you need to either win 3 rounds or reduce her points to 0. Likewise, if you lose 3 times or lose all your points the game will be over.
If you lose and decide to continue, the SHADOW DIRECTOR will offer you a present of either an IKARI + ESP power combo, or add 3 bonus levels to your HAIPAI technique.
■(CHEATING) LIKE A DRAGON !
During a round you will sometimes draw a tile imbued with either IKARI or ESP power. Hold on to this power and use it to cheat your way to victory!
This overpowered cheating technique will be your key to an easy win.
Once you have Tenpai and before you draw your next tile push the [Start] button (or [Right Ctrl] in MAME) repeatedly to build up the power meter. Once the meter is at its maximum, push the [N] button to perform the legendary IKARI tile switch technique!
If done correctly you will obtain just the tile you need to declare Tsumo.
Use your psychic power to see through your opponent's hand for a certain period of time. Particularly useful for when your opponent goes into Reach. ● HAIPAI
This technique affects the tiles that you will get in the beginning of the round. Think of them as pre-set hand builds that you can aim to complete for a higher score or an easy win.
Your HAIPAI technique will go up (or down) in level according to how well you performed during a round.
● TECHNIQUE LIST A : PAI KOUKAN (Lv 3) (This technique lets you discard the tiles you don't want before starting the round) B : IIPEIKOU (Lv 3) C : PINFU (Lv 6) D : TAN YAO (Lv 6) E : CHIITOI (Lv 9) F : SANSHOKU (Lv 9) G : ITTSUU (Lv 12) H : HON ITSU (lv 12) I : SHOUSANGEN (Lv 15) J : SAN ANKOU (Lv 15) K : CHIN ITSU (Lv 18) L : RYUUIISOU (Lv 19) M : DAI SHARIN (Lv 19) N : KYUUKYOKU (Lv 20) (Ultimate Technique)
In order to destroy JONGROUKAI you must defeat all of their Mahjong-crazed members.
【 FUKO HIGASHI 】 ● AGE : 16 ● N・NAME : FUKO OF FURITEN ● POINT : 20,000
【NAN NYAN NYAN 】 ● AGE : 19 ● N・NAME : THE MAHJONG TAOIST ● POINT : 40,000
【 NISHINO YUMA, YUKA, AND YUI 】 ● AGE : 17, 18, 16 ● N・NAME : THE SHADOW SISTERS ● POINT : 60,000
A parody of the KAZAMA sisters from SUKEBAN DEKA III. Note that the sisters count as a single opponent, so you only need to beat each sister once.
【 MAMI KITAJIMA 】 ● AGE : 17 ● N・NAME : GLASS MASK ● POINT : 90,000
JONGROUKAI second in command. You only need to beat her two times, though.
【 KAGE 】 ● AGE : UNKNOWN ● N・NAME : JONG KING ● POINT : 120,000
The mysterious figure behind JONGROUKAI, or is it? 【 HIMEKO KUJAKU 】 ● AGE : 17 ● POINT : 150,000
Surprise! The true leader behind JONGROUKAI is a 17-year old idol look-a-like.
Watch out though, she's a real Mahjong maniac!
SUKEBAN JANSHI RYUKO is certainly not one of the fanciest undressing Mahjong arcade games around. It doesn't have the best graphics, nor the most elaborated undressing scenes.
However, its overall low difficulty setting, advice mode, and the simple but effective cheating techniques, make of it an excellent choice for anyone wanting to get into Mahjong videogames.
Of course it's worth noting that you don't have to use any cheating techniques if you don't want to. But even if you choose not to use them, you will still notice the difference of facing a CPU rival that's not just incredibly cheap.
